Acquiring Dutch citizenship requires maintaining permanent residency for a period of five years. To maintain permanent residency, the resident must visit the country at least once per year. In addition to this requirement, there is also a Dutch language test that needs to be passed at the A2 level, the equivalent comprehension level expected from an eighth-grade student. Dutch is linguistically the closest language to English, which means that there are similarities in grammar, syntax, and vocabulary between the two languages.
